Hungarian Tarokk: Puzzle X2

HU-X2 Puzzle

You are one of the other three players, not the Declarer, and took two cards off the shared talon in a Solo contract. Your hand is now: XVIII, XIV, XI, V, Kdiamonds, Qhearts, Cclubs, Jspades, 10clubs, 1hearts, 1diamonds.

You must discard two cards to get back to nine. Your candidates are Qhearts, XVIII, Cclubs and Kdiamonds. Cross out the illegal one.

Reveal answer

Answer

Cross out Kdiamonds: Kings are protected in every player’s hand, not only in the Declarer’s. Qhearts, XVIII and Cclubs are all legal. A Queen or a Cavalier carries Card Points, a Queen 1 Card Point plus 3 pips and a Cavalier 1 Card Point plus 2 pips, but the discard law does not protect them: only the seven protected cards, the three honours and the four Kings at 1 Card Point plus 4 pips each, may never be discarded. Which two you discard is a different question: you are not the Declarer, so your discard counts for the Defenders whichever side you turn out to be on, and as the secret Partner a Queen you discard would score against you.
