Slovenian Tarok

Tarok

Four-player Slovenian variant of Central-European tarot, closely related to Austrian Königrufen but with a leaner, more competitive contract ladder. Forehand-only opening contracts (klop, three), then two/one with partner-by-called-king, solo three/two/one, beraÄ (beggar), solo without, open beggar, colour valat and valat. Bonuses (trula, kings, king ultimo, pagat ultimo, valat) score independently of the game and can be announced for double value. The 70-card-point alpine pip counting convention (3-card groups minus 2) is used.

Contracts

  • Klop (klopecki)Forehand-only contract — fires only when all 3 other players pass. Every player for themselves; you want to avoid taking tricks/points. Talon dribbles one face-up 'vitamin' card per trick (first 6 tricks) into the trick for the winner. A player who takes MORE than 35 card_points scores −70; a player who takes ZERO tricks scores +70. If nobody exceeds 35 and nobody is shut out, each player's card_points (rounded to nearest 5) are subtracted from their score. Negative-contract trick_resolution applies: must beat highest card on table; pagat playable only as last legal option. Compulsory klop is forced when a player's cumulative score reaches exactly zero OR when a player is dealt no taroks.
  • Three (tri / trojka)Forehand-only — only available when all other 3 players pass. Declarer calls a king (silent partner). Picks 3 cards from talon (the set-of-3 mode), discards 3. Need ≥36 card_points on declarer's side. Score = 10 + difference + bonuses. Difference = (declarer_side_card_points − 35) rounded to nearest 5.
  • Two (dva / dvojka)Call a king. Talon exposed as 3 sets of 2; pick one set (2 cards), discard 2. Need ≥36 card_points. Score = 20 + difference + bonuses.
  • One (ena / enka / enojka)Call a king. Talon exposed as 6 individual cards; pick 1, discard 1. Need ≥36 card_points. Score = 30 + difference + bonuses.
  • Solo three (solo tri)Declarer plays alone vs 3. Talon picked up (3 of 3). Need ≥36 card_points alone. After exchange, declarer may upgrade to colour valat. Score = 40 + difference + bonuses.
  • Solo two (solo dva)Declarer alone, 2 cards from talon. Score = 50 + difference + bonuses. May upgrade to colour valat after exchange.
  • Solo one (solo ena)Declarer alone, 1 card from talon. Score = 60 + difference + bonuses. May upgrade to colour valat after exchange.
  • Pikolo (piccolo)Optional negative contract per pagat.com Variations: declarer plays alone aiming to win EXACTLY one trick. Ranks between solo-ena and berac. Worth 70. Most Slovenian players do not allow this contract (considered too easy), hence advanced scope. Negative-contract trick resolution applies (stichzwang ON; Pagat-only-as-last-resort).
  • BeraÄ (Beggar)Declarer alone, takes no tricks. Talon untouched and unseen (placed face-down). Stichzwang ON: must beat highest card if possible. Pagat may only be played as last card, last trump, or only legal option. No bonuses, no difference. Declarer leads the first card. Win/lose is flat 70.
  • Solo without (solo brez / brez talona)Declarer alone. Talon (unrevealed) goes to opposition. Need ≥36 card_points. No bonuses, no difference. Captured-mond penalty still applies. Flat 80.
  • Open beggar (odprti beraÄ)BeraÄ with declarer's hand face-up after the first trick. Opponents may NOT discuss the play. Stichzwang ON. Pagat-only-as-forced rule applies.
  • Colour valat (barvni valat brez)Declarer alone, no talon, wins ALL tricks while TAROKS ARE NOT TRUMP — they function as a 5th suit. A void player must still play a tarok, but a tarok does NOT beat a plain-suit card. Declarer leads to first trick. Most often arrived at by upgrading a solo-3/2/1 after seeing the talon (those upgrades cost no extra contract value beyond the difference of 125 vs the solo's base). Bidding colour-valat directly = 'colour valat without'. No bonuses, no difference. Flat 125.
  • Valat (valat brez)Declarer alone, no talon, wins ALL tricks WITH normal trump rules. No bonuses, no difference, no other scoring. Flat 500. An announcement of valat cancels all other bonuses/announcements on that hand.
