Hungarian Tarokk

Tarok

Four-player Hungarian variant of tarot derived in the 19th century from Austrian Zwanzigerrufen. Uses a 42-card pack (54 minus the low 7/8/9 of black and 2/3/4 of red). Anticlockwise. Each player is dealt 9 cards; 6 cards form the talon. Auction over four bids — three / two / one / solo — indicating the number of talon cards declarer will exchange. Declarer calls the XX as silent partner (or descends to XIX/XVIII if holding the XX, or to any non-honour tarokk if anyone other than declarer discarded a tarokk). Total card_points = 94 (Hungarian counting, NOT the Alpine 3-card subtraction). The team that takes > 47 card_points wins the game; declarer's side wins ≥ 48. Bonuses (trull, four kings, XXI-catch, double-game, volát, pagát-ultimo) score separately and can be announced for double. Losing the XXI to the skíz earns the catch-loser the mocking title 'Polgármester' (Mayor) per Tarokk-Őr (1940); the 'mayor's hat' physical prop is a pagat.com / online-tradition extension not attested in the Hungarian primary sources.

Contracts

  • Három (Three)Declarer takes 3 talon cards. Calls a tarokk (default XX) as silent partner. Need ≥48 card_points (out of 94). Game payment = 1 point. The 4th-position 'próbahárom' permitted without honour but auto-loses if no honour is drawn from talon.
  • Kettő (Two)2 cards from talon. Game payment = 2 points.
  • Egy (One)1 card from talon. Game payment = 3 points.
  • Szóló (Solo)0 talon cards. Whole talon goes to the 3 defenders (distributed and discarded back into their pile). Game payment = 4 points. Still partnership — declarer calls a tarokk (XX or fallback).
