Three. You called the King of Diamonds. The talon is spread in two groups of three: Group A holds K, VI, 8
. Group B holds Q
, J
, 2
.
Which group should you take, and what happens to the other?
Answer
Group A, the one holding your called K
: the king-rescue lets you take it, and taking it is the choice that makes sense here. Group B’s three cards then wait face-down beside the table instead of joining the defenders’ pile. Win a trick with the K
later and they land on it, yours entirely; lose the K
first, and that waiting pile is lost with it. Take Group B instead and your own called King goes to the defenders for good, a choice no Declarer should make on purpose.
