Dappen — Puzzle S3

Seven players. The team crosses the line with 45 Card Points: the Dapper’s contract has failed. But on the very last trick, the Dapper’s declared Pagat Ultimo came home anyway: the I won it clean. The Dapper’s own pile (tricks and discards together): I, XXI, Skus, K♥, K♦, Q♠, C♣, J♦, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII.

Answer

The team wins the round. Count the Dapper’s own pile directly, the same three steps as always: twenty cards, divided by two and rounded down, gives 10; the printed pips (I, XXI and Skus 4 each, K♥ and K♦ 4 each, Q♠ 3, C♣ 2, J♦ 1, the rest nothing) add 26 more: 10 + 26 = 36 Card Points. The team’s 45 already crossed forty, so the round is theirs, and the tier is read from the Dapper’s own 36, the 33–39 band: each opponent writes 5 Victory Points, plain Dapp column. And here is the Dappen family’s own USP: the Dapper STILL writes 30 Victory Points for the successful Pagat Ultimo, contract lost and all. A bonus belongs to whoever earned it, win or lose, and a Dapper can watch their round collapse and still walk away the biggest scorer at the table.
