The contract fails. One needed 48 and reached only 40, so the defenders each score 3, the contract’s value. But the silent Pagat Ultimo still counts: Declarer’s side adds 5, because bonuses belong to whoever earned them, win or lose, kontra’d or not. Losing the contract does not erase a trick you actually won.
