Three. You called the King of Diamonds. The talon is spread in two groups of three: Group A holds K♦, VI, 8♣. Group B holds Q♣, J♠, 2♥.
Which group should you take, and what happens to the other?

Answer
Group A, the one holding your called K♦: the king-rescue lets you take it, and taking it is the choice that makes sense here. Group B’s three cards then wait face-down beside the table instead of joining the defenders’ pile. Win a trick with the K♦ later and they land on it, yours entirely; lose the K♦ first, and that waiting pile is lost with it. Take Group B instead and your own called King goes to the defenders for good, a choice no Declarer should make on purpose.
